Biography of Mons. Corrado De Vito (1904-1970 )

Born in Provvidenti and died in Bologna, Italy, in 1977. His remains were requested by the Indian government for burial under the main altar of the Lucknow Cathedral which he began, but did not see its completion.

Man of culture, author of many books written in English and some of them translated into Italian, such as, La Fanciulla del Gange, Ai Piedi dell'Himalaya, Tra L'incudine ed il Martello, L'Arte al servizio della fede, which encumpasses painting, architecture, symbolisms, local customs, music and dance.

His dioces was situated on the fertile plain between the Gangze and the Gunti, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, close to the borders of Nepal and Tibet.

He founded a secular religious woman's institution called the Ancelle dei Poveri, under the hospices of its main order Santa Maria Gorreti. Having the main order in Barabanki, India, and its religious training in Bologna, Italy.

His contribution during his mission in the diocese of Locknow were considerable. He founded 38 schools of every order and level. He founded 4 orphinages, 20 dispensaries, 3 hospitals, a seminary and a monumental cathedral of Locknow.

The people of Provvidenti have a bust in his honor in the middle of Piazza Umberto Prima.
