Town of Provvidenti

History

An ancient tradition says that Provvidenti was in Samnite times (before the 3rd century BC) the wheat supplier of the ancient city of the Frentani called Gerione, destroyed by Hannibal during the second Punic War. Historical information record the existence of the municipality in the 12th century; in the early 16th century it was a possession of the Di Capua family, then in 1555 passed to the D’Ajerbo, followed by the Cavaniglia family until the 17th century, when the fiefdom passed to the Di Sangr, who kept it until feudalism was abolished.
The town of Provvidenti is located in the province of Campobasso which is divided into 84 Municipalities with a surface area of 2909 square km and a population, in the census of the year 2000, of 235,452 inhabitants. The present territory of the Province was not the same as in past centuries. After the unity of Italy, in 1861, the borders of the whole Molise region were fixed along the Fortore and Volturno rivers and the region was united to Abruzzo for about a century.
After the Second World War there was a strong movement to make the region autonomous, and in December 1964 a constitutional law established Molise as an independent region with one Province, and capital Campobasso. On February 2, 1970 fifty two municipalities of this Province were separated and a new Province, Isernia, was established.
Provvidenti is located in the Molise region of Campobasso, situated between Casacalenda and Morrone del Sannio.

Calvario di Provvidenti
On good Friday the procession makes its way to the Calvary where a mass is celebrated representing Galgotha. Unfortunately the site has been neglected over the past few years but the foundation hopes to restore the site through independant and corporate donations.

Piazza Umberto I
The bust represents a monument to one of Provvidenti's renouned sons: Monseigneur Corrado De Vito who was the bishop of Luknow, India and advisor to Indira Gandhi.

Procession Facing Madonna Della Libera Church
This historic Church was used as a field hospital by the Allies during WWII.

Ode to Provvidenti
Sweet
dear Provvidenti
From the hilltop
You dominate the valley
to safeguard the Moise county
Although
through time and history
You have been ignored
Only Agustus Legions
Were worthy of your
Fresh Sulphuric waters
You
still hold the shape
Of a tiny bourg
Within rocky fields
In silence, you conserve
The history and events
You wish to remember
Time
and history
You have seen go by
With faith and devotion
To your sanctuary
You keep a silent vigil
Firm on the hill
You await the dear return
Of your far away sons

Proverbs
Uno
sciocco e il suo denaro son presto separati
Meglio tardi che mai
Al bisogno si conosce l'amico
Tal padre, tal figlio
Sbagliando s'impara
Ride bene chi ride l'ultimo
Tanti paesi, tanti costumi
Occhio per occhio, dente per dente
La carità comincia a casa propia
Lupo non mangia lupo
